Cetaceans

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises belong to the group of marine mammals called cetaceans. Cetaceans can be further broken down into odontocetes, the toothed whales, dolphins and porpoises, and mysticetes which include the large baleen whales. Below you will find links to explore the normal anatomy of a representive odontocete, the harbor porpoise (Phocoeena phocoena).

Pinnipeds

Pinnipeds

Sea lions, seals, and the walrus belong to the group of marine mammals called pinnipeds. The sea lions such as the California and Stellar sea lions as well as the fur seals, belong to the family otariidae while the true seals such as elephant seals and harbor seals belong to the phocid family. Walrus are in their own family called odobenids.
